I attended St. Andrew's Grade School, where the School Sisters of Notre Dame made a lasting impression on me. I knew I wanted to teach the first time Sister Renee allowed me to use chalk on her slate blackboard. Writing materials may have changed, but my love of teaching is alive and well. I earned a B.A. English and B.S. in Elementary Educataion from the University of MN and received my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with K-12 Reading Licensure from Concordia University. As a trained Orton-Gillingham language therapist, I focus my energies on teaching reading, and find my job as Resource Teacher and School Librarian to be very gratifying.

A D M I N I S T R A T I O N :

Principal:  Maggie Quast

Maggie QuastPrior to becoming principal, I was the fifth grade teacher for ten years here at MMSA. I am a graduate of Drake University with my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I earned my Masters Degree in K-12 Reading Instruction from the University of St. Thomas. I am also a licensed Reading Specialist. I believe as educators, it is our job to find how each student learns and set the bar high so that each student can work to their full potential using the gifts God has given them. I am very proud of our school and the deep roots we have in the Como Park neighborhood.

I graduated from the University of Saint Thomas with a double major in Elementary Education and English. I began teaching in 1999 and I have experience in Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 6th grade, and computer technology.  I have been teaching at MMSA since 2010. Being a teacher has always been my dream, and I am fortunate to teach in a Catholic school where I can share my educational knowledge as well as my faith and values. Grade 1:  Terri Saleck-Weber

I received my B.A. in Elementary Education from St. Catherine University and my M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, along with a license in Reading, from the University of St. Thomas.  I have enjoyed working with primary students and their families at MMSA since 1993!  Helping my students open the magic door of joyful reading and writing is my passion as a teacher.  I also value working in this wonderful MMSA community and sharing my Catholic faith with others.

Grade 2:  Katie Roche

I am so excited to be joining the MMSA family!! I grew up on the east side of Saint Paul. I went to Presentation of Mary grade school and Hill-Murray high school.  I received my bachelor’s degree from University of Notre Dame and my master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas.  I come from a family of Catholic school teachers and feel so blessed to be able to share our faith daily at MMSA.

 Grade 3:  Mary Jacobson

I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Elementary Education and a concentration in Spanish. I have been at MMSA since 2000. Growing up, I loved school and always wanted to be a teacher. I enjoy being able to help students learn, and I especially enjoy being able to help them grow in their Catholic faith. I am blessed to teach at MMSA. We have devoted, supportive families and a wonderful school!

 Grade 4:  Adam Sattler

I graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth and spent time substitute teaching in the Roseville, Stillwater, and North St. Paul/Maplewood/Oakdale school districts.  I began teaching 4th grade at Maternity of Mary St. Andrew in 2014.  As a product of Catholic school education, I very much wanted to work at a school which carried on the same tradition of faith that I grew up with.  I feel very blessed to be where I am teaching at a school where I can live and share my faith!

Grade 5David Gottwalt

Dave GottwaltMy name is Dave Gottwalt, and I am the new 5th grade teacher at Maternity of Mary/St. Andrew School this year.  I bring nearly 24 years of teaching experience to this new position, and I have a deep love for Christ and our Catholic faith.  I taught for 17 years in the St. Paul Public School District and gained much knowledge and experience of how to teach students of various backgrounds and needs.  I am excited to be here and to share my love for learning and for my faith.  I enjoy singing in my church choir at Transfiguration in Oakdale and attending the Catechetical Institute in the Archdiocese. When I'm not teaching, I really enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities;  especially camping and biking.

Language Arts: Madeline Pilon

I graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in Teaching Communication Arts and Literature. My teaching instruction brought me a variety of experiences: from working in an inner city school in Duluth, MN; to a middle school in rural Wisconsin; all the way to a high school in the heart of Seoul, South Korea. I have been at MMSA since 2014, and I enjoy working with students and passing on my love of reading. Also, I am grateful to work in an environment where I can share my faith with my students and the MMSA community.

As a graduate of East Tennessee State University, I received a Bachelor of Science with a major in Psychology and then continued my education at the University of St. Thomas, where I received a Masters in Elementary Education specializing in 5th through 8th grade Science. I also had an opportunity to travel with NET Ministries, where I shared the Catholic Faith with teens across the country. Working at MMSA since 2009 has allowed me to combine my passion for the truth of Christ and the truth of Science. I love working with the middle school students as they explore the world around them and grow into strong young men and women of faith.

I taught middle school social studies at MMSA for three years until I had my twin boys and decided to stay home. In 2010 I returned to MMSA and felt like I was right at home.  MMSA has a rich history of sound academics, deep faith and service to others.

I am grateful to be a part of MMSA, where I can share my faith, participate in service to others, and model an enthusiasm for learning.

S P E C I A L I S T S :

Physical Education:  Jeanne Carlson

My teaching career began at Maternity of Mary – St. Andrew School in the fall of 1989 just months after graduating from the University of St. Thomas where I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education K-12 and my Coaching Certificate. This was the first year of the Maternity of Mary and St. Andrew parish school merger.  I've enjoyed every year I've been blessed to work with the children here.  Being in a school with a strong Catholic identity, a wonderful sense of community, and sincerely caring staff truly makes it a joy to walk in the doors every morning. I strive to keep my K-8 Physical Education curriculum fresh so my students get as much benefit from their time in class as possible. Along with teaching Physical Education, I also enjoy coaching volleyball for the 5-8 grade girls.

Title I / Resource / Library/ Communications:  Marietta McCullough

Extended Day: Sr. Andre Wickenheiser

Art: Angie Schaps

I grew up in Saint Paul & Minneapolis and have loved drawing & painting as far back as I can
remember. As a child, I would draw and paint on any blank surface, short of our home's walls. But years later, while studying at MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art & Design), I did get to paint on walls: I painted children's bedroom murals to earn extra money. I also worked as a studio manager for a commercial photographer for several years, and I felt at home surrounded by awesome creativity. After marrying my husband, Tony, I had a baby and became a stay-at-home mom to our wonderful daughter, Isabella (I loved every minute). She is in the 6th grade this year at MMSA.

I feel incredibly grateful and honored that God would give me this wonderful opportunity, and I am blessed to have the chance to share my talents given to me by Him with the children of MMSA.
